Aromatherapy for Depression Relief

Does aromatherapy for depression relief work, and what are the mechanisms behind it?

While aromatherapy treatment might not actually completely cure a person going through depression, what it will certainly do is elevate his or her mood and bring about a positive attitude. This is because aromatherapy among other things, is like a detoxification process both psychologically and physiologically.

Most people going through depression tend to be negative, pessimistic, and sad. All these are negative emotions that generate a lot of negative energy in the person, and this itself can cause a lot of stress emotionally as well as physically.

What aromatherapy does is it tends to detoxify the person physiologically by ensuring the toxins from within the body are released, and the person thus feels less stressed and fatigued. This will naturally affect the person’s state of mind, too, and the person will immediately experience a sense of lightness, relaxation of the mind, and relief from the pressures that occupy his or her mind.

The basis on which aromatherapy for depression relief operates is the sense of smell which is associated with certain centers of the brain. When the essential oils perforate through the pores of the skin and when a person inhales the smell of these oils used in aromatherapy, they stimulate the endocrine system in the human body.

In addition, the limbic region of the brain, which is directly responsible for depression mechanisms, is also stimulated. Therefore, the tendency of the human mind and body will be to relax, calm down, and bring about a positive change in attitude. Thus, the principle on which aromatherapy for depression relief works is to indulge the sense of smell, followed by relaxing and calming the physical and emotional aspects of the human body, which contributes to elevating depressed feelings in a person.

Sleeping Well

People suffering from anxiety and depression can benefit from aromatherapy mainly because they need to relax their body and mind, so as to control and even reduce the symptoms of depression a person is experiencing. Undergoing aromatherapy for depression relief can help to calm the system and induce good sleep.

The latter is an important benefit, as insomnia is one of the main symptoms of depression, and this particular problem can lead to a host of other issues, such as feeling fatigued, irritability, hypersensitivity, etc. It is crucial for a person going through depression to sleep well and feel rested, and in this regard, aromatherapy is one treatment that will help induce sleep without any side effects.

Once the sleep-wake cycle is established, the person will respond better to the regular course of treatment being followed, and the attitude and outlook of the person will also become more positive and optimistic.

Thus, using an essential oil of the person’s choice, one can go in for multiple sessions of aromatherapy for depression relief and continue this for as long as one wishes to. Lavender, chamomile, citronella, eucalyptus, jasmine, lemongrass, rose geranium, sandalwood, tea tree, tangerine, and vanilla are some of the most popular and effective essential oils that are used extensively for aromatherapy.
