Atypical Depression Symptom and Warning Signs

One main atypical depression symptom distinguishing the condition from other forms of depression is that, persons suffering from it start feeling better with positive developments.

Their mood or state of mind can be influenced if there is a change in the environment. A happy occasion or celebration will alleviate their mood and they do start feeling better, unlike in other forms of depression where surrounding circumstances fail to alter their state of mind.

Other typical symptoms of atypical depression are as listed below:

  • Excessive sleep or hypersonmia: Persons suffering from atypical depression feel sleepy and tend to oversleep, fall asleep at odd hours, and refuse to wake on time. This is in contrast to persons suffering from other forms of depression, who are more likely to suffer from insomnia or sleeplessness.
  • Excessive hunger and eating or hyperphagia: Another of the common atypical depression symptoms is excessive hunger and eating or hyperphagia. This is another symptom that is very different from the classic symptoms of clinical depression, which often include loss of appetite. Here, persons suffering from the condition feel hungry and overeat, which then results in weight gain.

  • Marked inactivity: This symptom of atypical depression is a byproduct of oversleeping and overeating, and persons often complain of feeling too bogged down to do anything thing that involves physical labor. A person suffering from the condition may also experience a feeling of heaviness in his or her limbs.

  • Hypersensitivity: These persons demonstrate a hypersensitive nature, which is easily provoked and results in them feeling sad or down. Overall, they may be very sensitive to rejection.

  • As mentioned above, a person who is having the atypical form of depression may experience "feeling better" with each positive development or event in his or her life, although this effect is only temporary.
