Can't Sleep? - Read about Depression and InsomniaAre you depressed, suffering from insomnia and can't sleep? Sleep is a natural and normal state of bodily rest observed throughout the animal kingdom. Deep sleep can re-energize and re-vitalize the mind and body, which is extremely important for one to function at one's optimum best. Restful sleep relaxes a person at both the physiological and psychological levels, thereby generating fresh energy which will help one cope with various stressful events, incidents, etc. Insomnia is defined as a condition where one is unable to get enough sleep both in terms of quality and quantity. While some have a problem trying to fall asleep, some have a problem staying asleep; either way, one can't sleep well and is denied of good and restful sleep. One of the characteristic features of insomnia is feeling tired or fatigued post sleep. There are several causes of insomnia; however, people suffering from depression seem to suffer from insomnia a lot more than the rest suffering from other health conditions. Unlike in other physiological conditions, for people suffering from depression, it is difficult to determine if insomnia was one of the contributing factors to psychological stress, trauma, and depression, or if depression contributed to lack of sleep and insomnia. In fact, a lot of clinical and scientific studies carried out on different groups of people suffering from depression and who can't sleep have demonstrated it works both ways. For example, elderly people who suffer from insomnia are at a higher risk of suffering from depression as compared to the rest of the population. Similarly, people suffering from severe forms of depression continue to suffer from insomnia as long as the depressive episode lasts. Either way, it is established that sleep is critical to one's physical and mental wellbeing, and if one cannot sleep well at night consistently for over two weeks, one must do something about it, and perhaps even seek help if necessary. For people who can't sleep, there are several tips that one can use in improving the quality of sleep, which is as important as getting the right amount of sleep. While sleep cycles and patterns are bodily functions that are established and taken care of by our body, applying free will and the willingness to readily surrender to our physical body and admit that it knows what is best for us doesn't come naturally to most of us. During childhood and most adulthood, good health and sleep are taken for granted and the system is abused indefinitely till it starts falling apart. Instead of waiting for the system to push back and say it is enough, it is in our interest to go with the flow of nature and follow certain basic principals in resting the body and mind in an attempt to contribute to a healthy body and health mind.
