Do Chocolates Reduce Depression?

Is it true that chocolates reduce depression?

Well, it cannot get any better than chocolates and depression, can it? Yes, scientific studies and research conducted by several universities all over the world have proven that chocolates do indeed help to reduce depression and ultimately elevate the mood of someone suffering from the condition.

Could this be one of the main reasons why children appear to be happier than grown ups? Well, not exactly, because what we are referring to here is dark chocolate, and not the conventional chocolate snacks which most of us consume. While dark chocolates reduce depression, the other versions do not.

Dark chocolate has been found to contain antioxidants which are also contained in an entire range of fruits and vegetables. Red wine, too, contains similar antioxidants, and these antioxidants serve the same purpose, which is to strengthen and build our immunity, as well as to fight off other lethal disease conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular conditions.

In addition to the above purpose, dark chocolates can increase the production of endorphins and serotonin in the human brain. As many of us may be aware, serotonin is one of the main neurotransmitters in the brain whose levels affect moods; lack of serotonin can cause depression. Therefore, any boost in the production of serotonin is welcome, especially in people going through depression. In this regard, it is true that dark chocolates reduce depression.

Endorphins, on the other hand, are opiates which are generally released in the body when we exercise, work out, or have sex. And these endorphins help elevate the mood of people, including those experiencing depression. In this way, too, do dark chocolates reduce depression.

An increase in the production of both endorphins and serotonin - that is indeed a potent combination which eating dark chocolate provides in fighting depression, However, just like anything else, it is advisable not to get addicted to dark chocolate, either.

Do take note of the following pointers if you wish to indulge in a healthy serving of dark chocolate. Dark chocolate might not work as effectively when it is mixed or eaten with other foods, since those foods might completely dissolve its ability to boost the production of serotonin and endorphins.

Therefore, mixing dark chocolate with cold milk or coffee, etc, might not yield the desired results. It is best to consume dark chocolate in its raw form, in order to harness the complete benefits of awesome dark chocolate.
