Therefore, patients should not neglect any advice given by the psychiatrist once they start feeling better, but continue to take the medication until the next visit. Besides psychotherapy and pharmacological treatment modalities, there are several extremely effective natural self-help strategies that can help people deal with clinical depression. Some tips on helping oneself during these difficult times are:

  • Healthy Diet: Research studies have confirmed that certain foods contribute to alleviating the symptoms of depression, especially when there is a tendency or history of depression. These foods include folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin B8 compounds. Foods rich in these substances help regulate and bring about a certain balance in the brain chemistry, which then helps relieve the symptoms of depression. Fish oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and including salmon or any other oily fish in the daily diet will certainly help tackle the symptoms of depression.

    Similarly, folic acid supplements available in the form of tablets or pills can be obtained and taken as per prescription in an attempt to decrease depression. Vitamin B found in spinach, asparagus, broccoli, etc, also helps prevent depression. Hence, it is important for people with a history of depression to ensure that all these three ingredients are included in the diet on a regular basis. For those already afflicted by the condition, these foods and nutrients are excellent for supplement any overall clinical depression treatment protocol, while for the rest of us, these nutrients are great for health in any case.

  • Exercise, Yoga, and Meditation: This is an excellent tool to support any clinical depression treatment method. Studies indicate that low levels of chemical components like serotonin are mainly responsible for causing depression. Yoga and meditation can be practiced in the comfort of one’s home and will not strain or stress any muscles in the body - in fact, they can be extremely relaxing.   • Get Enough Sleep: Having sufficient rest is critical for the success of clinical depression treatment and prevention. People suffering from depression tend to also experience insomnia and sleeplessness, which lead to fatigue, tiredness, and depleting energy levels. Therefore, every attempt should be made to ensure that they get adequate sleep at night without any medication.

    Exercise, yoga, and meditation certainly help people sleep well at night, but it is also important to discover and use other methods which will encourage people to sleep. These could include reading, drinking a glass of hot herbal tea before bedtime, or just making the bedroom more conducive for sleeping by investing in a better quality mattress, etc. By sleeping well, people feel re-energized and ready to taken on some of the challenges the next morning, and this does make a huge difference to people with depression.

If it is possible, it is always best to identify these people and discuss the problem with them honestly and upfront.

    Friends and family can certainly help depressed people by resolving some of the conflicts in their minds and also by ensuring that they get necessary professional help on time. Indeed, a healthy social support system is very important for any attempts at clinical depression treatment or prevention.

These are some very important methods of helping treat people suffering from depression. Generally, a strong clinical depression treatment program comprises a healthy combination of these modalities.
