There are many different ways of dealing with depression.

And because depression is a mental health condition with so many possible triggers and causes, it is a good idea to tackle the ailment through a holistic and multi-faceted approach.

So, what can be done to cope with, treat and overcome depression?

The first step of the battle is to accept that there is indeed a problem; many depressed persons, due to societal stereotypes and stigma, are in denial that they are affected by depression.

There are numerous self help strategies which can help in dealing with depression. These include a good diet, regular exercise, sufficient rest and sleep, a healthy social life, as well as an overall productive and fulfilling life. Learning to cope with stress and to let go of worries, anxieties and frustrations are also critical for keeping depression at bay.

Certain foods and nutrients, for example omega 3 fatty acids, are excellent for helping to prevent and overcome depression.

It is also important for one to learn to share one's thoughts and feelings, especially negative ones, so that they do not remain repressed within one's system and manifest themselves as a bigger problem later. In this regard, having a confidant or someone to talk to would be very helpful.

Of course, a positive attitude and the determination to overcome the condition are very crucial for dealing with depression, too.

And then there are many safe and effective natural remedies for depression which could be used. These include yoga, herbal remedies such as St. John’s wort, aromatherapy, acupuncture, as well as other alternative treatments for depression.
