Depression and Diabetes - DiscussionBoth depression and diabetes are extremely lethal and dangerous conditions, mainly because they manifest very slowly and people suffering from these conditions may not even realize they are being affected by them. While diabetes affects the physiological aspects of the human body, depression affects the emotional and psychological aspects of the human being. Research conducted by several organizations and healthcare facilities clearly indicate that people suffering from diabetes are at a higher risk of suffering from depression, as compared to people without diabetes. While the exact nature of the cause has not been established, reports strongly indicate that people with diabetes are more prone to suffer from depressive mental states How and why is depression and diabetes linked? Diabetes is a condition which has to be carefully managed. Affected persons have to watch their weight, follow a strict diet, invest in an exercise program, and ensure that they take their medication regularly without fail. The fact that they cannot indulge in eating their favorite foods can often pose a huge challenge to them. All of this can bog people down considerably and their inability to come to terms with their condition can make them extremely negative and pessimistic. This impacts their thinking, and ultimately could make them depressed and helpless. Under such circumstances of depression and diabetes, it is very important for family and friends to counsel loved ones, help them take care of their condition, and see that they do not slip into depression. In addition, it is advisable that people who are diagnosed with diabetes soon go through a depression screening test, to ensure that they are not slowly slipping into a depressed state. Stress caused by knowing that they have diabetes often ends up upsetting their mood, behavior patterns, and thought process, which can then cause severe depression. It is therefore extremely important to ensure that the person stays calm, and understands that diabetes can be controlled effectively by following a health diet and exercise program. Once the affected persons are convinced that diabetes can be treated and blood glucose levels can be effectively controlled, the chances of them getting depressed about their condition become lower. If they do feel depressed, chances are they will snap out of it more easily. Counseling and therapy should be undertaken at the same time so that the diabetic specialist can counsel affected persons regarding effective methods of combating diabetes, while psychotherapists can at the same time instill a sense of optimism and self confidence which will prevent these persons from slipping into depression. In addition, lots of love, affection, and support from friends and family will help these persons overcome their fears and negative emotions, thus helping them to overcome both depression and diabetes.
