Feeling Sad and Depressed? - Understand and Help Yourself

Are you, or perhaps a loved one of yours is, feeling sad and depressed?

Life is filled with dualities - there is joy and sorrow, highs and lows, a bright side and a dark side, ups and downs, and at every turn one has to experience one or the other emotion.

Certain circumstances in life pose serious challenges, and when one is unable to cope with the situation on hand or doesn't get the desired results, there is disappointment. Disappointment leads to dissatisfaction, frustration, anger, fear, shame, guilt, and a whole lot of negative feelings. These negative emotions fester within and if there is no proper outlet to channel them out, they will end up creating a lot of havoc at the psychological level.

If one repeatedly faces defeats and challenges that one isn't able to overcome, for example situations that involve physical illness, separation, loss of a loved one, financial instability, etc, it can end up making a person feel totally down and out. Under trying circumstances like these, it is natural to feel sad and depressed.

However, one cannot live in this state always, as that will probably increase the severity of depression, ultimately leading to thoughts and even actions of suicide. Therefore, it is very important for people close to the one going through a crisis to keep a keen eye and look out for signs and symptoms of him or her being sad and depressed.

Unhealthy eating patterns, lack of sleep or insomnia, unexplained aches and pains, lack of interest in personal and professional life, inability to concentrate, inability to make decisions, and feeling down predominantly are all signs of underlying depression. If more than four of these signs persist for over two weeks, one needs to seriously consider seeking professional help.

In order to build one's ability to cope with various stress factors both physically and psychologically, it is important for one to invest in oneself and understand one's personality type. While some people are emotionally needy, there are those that are not emotionally inclined. Therefore, depending on one's personality, it is important to cultivate strengths that will help one cope or overcome one's weaknesses.

Yoga, meditation, exercise, dance, and music are all forms of healing that will help clam the mind down, develop peace, and one will learn to be accepting of various situations and challenges life poses. Learning to share one's feelings, worries, fears, and concerns with others also helps reduce the emotional baggage one is carrying and makes one gain another perspective, which can be extremely profound and helpful in dealing with being sad and depressed.

Thus, one must first establish what works for oneself. For example, you could take a self-evaluation or self-assessment test which can help you determine your personality type. Based on that, you could then work on your weakness and learn to overcome sadness and stress without feeling depressed.

For persons who are feeling sad and depressed, there are various natural remedies for depression, which include dietary changes, herbal remedies, and alternative therapies which could help. .
