Situational Depression - Discussion

Situational depression is mostly circumstantial in nature and almost everyone experiences this form of depression during his or her life. It is mostly a condition that does not last too long, but that also depends entirely on the nature of the situation in question.

Situational depression is also referred to as adjustment disorder.

Often, people overcome various challenging situations in life and, soon, the signs and symptoms of this form of depression disappear. However, there are still a good number who get affected intensely by situational depression and need professional help.

Some of the common factors or causes that trigger depression which is situational in nature include:

  • Unexpected or sudden death of a family member or friend.

  • Meeting with a major accident resulting in disability or any other form of permanent damage.

  • Being diagnosed with a major illness or having a loved one who is diagnosed with major illness.

  • Being subject to violent and traumatic experiences like rape, molestation, physical abuse, robbery, attempted murder, etc.

  • Losing a job suddenly and experiencing the inability to cope with the accompanied financial and emotional problems.

  • Being trapped in a fire or any other natural calamities like hurricanes, snow storms, etc.

  • Sudden relocation to an entire new country with little or no friends and family around; having to spend lots of time in solitude.

Depending on the situation, this form of depression lasts from a few weeks to several months. The duration of situational depression is directly dependent on how the affected person is able to cope with the situation at hand.

For example, a mom who loses her child might find it extremely difficult to overcome the grief in a short period of time, and will understandingly take much longer as compared to a professional who loses his or her job. Therefore, there is no specific timeframe or definite answer regarding the duration of this type of depression - it really varies from person to person and depends entirely on the situation.

As situational depression is related to external factors, it will typically get resolved once afflicted persons come to term with the situation. Persons suffering from this kind of depression need a lot of love, care, understanding and compassion more than any other treatment.

Some tips on caring and helping people suffering from such depression are:

  • Encourage them to grieve, cry, and talk about their loss or share their sorrow with someone who can provide moral support.

  • Persons suffering from this type of depression should try and keep themselves occupied in both mental and physical activities for as much time as possible.

  • If it is possible, they must try going out for a walk in a nearby park or watch the sunset and connect with nature, as nature has some truly amazing powers and one would start feeling better instantly.

  • They should also learn to divert their attention and focus on other situations, people, children, and parents, so that they stop thinking about the same traumatic situation.

  • Besides all of the above, one could also try and seek professional help by attending counseling and therapy sessions.

Almost all persons suffering from situational depression recover completely and lead normal healthy lives again. However, it will not be an instantaneous recovery and will understandably take some time.
