Synthroid Depression Medication

Synthroid depression medicine was first developed in the year 1955. Synthroid is a medication used to treat a condition called hypothyroidism. In patients suffering from hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland does not produce the required quantity of the thyroid hormone thyroxine.

Now, when there is a decrease in the thyroxine level, the human body begins to slow down and there is a serious lack of energy. The action of Synthroid is to act as thyroxine and maintain the level of thyroxine required by the body to function normally.

One of the symptoms of hypothyroidism is depression. Therefore, patients suffering from depression are sometimes required to undergo certain blood tests. In these examinations, the blood is tested or checked for thyroid hormone levels.

In addition, the blood is also tested for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and prolactin. If the results indicate that the level of prolactin is normal but the TSH levels are high, it suggests that one may have to start taking supplements of thyroid hormone or Synthroid depression medicine to increase energy levels as well as to decrease damage to the heart and blood vessels. Physicians need to know the level of TSH in the blood to administer the correct dose of thyroid supplements or Synthroid depression medications in patients.

Synthroid actually plays the role of the thyroid supplement, and the actual name of the medication is levothyroxine sodium; Synthroid is one of the brand names. Synthroid works just like the thyroxine hormone which the body generates. Synthroid or thyroxine supplement is carried through the blood stream and is absorbed by cells in the human body. Synthroid is said to also help increase the levels of serotonin in the brain.

Patients suffering from hypothyroidism and taking Synthroid depression drug are strongly discouraged from stopping the drug on their own, unless advised by the physician. This is because if Synthroid pills are not taken as prescribed, there will be a further imbalance in the thyroxine level, and the entire treatment might have to be started from the very beginning. Regular tests to check TSH levels are an indication of appropriate thryoxine levels in the body.

Like all chemical drug medications, Synthroid of course also comes with its fair share of side effects. These include difficulty breathing, fever, hair loss (mild), headache, hives, hot flashes, insomnia, irritability, menstrual irregularities, nervousness, sweating, swelling on face, lips, throat or tongue, as well as weight changes.
