Teen Depression TreatmentThis page discusses briefly about teen depression treatment. Depression should be detected early and treated as soon as possible, irrespective of what age the affected person is. In teens, however, diagnosis and treatment needs to be immediate and followed up with utmost care, because this is an extremely vulnerable age during which all rational thought and advice fall on deaf ears. Teens often do not like to discuss their problems with anyone and dislike being told anything, which makes it very difficult for parents and loved ones to take care of them. However, if a teen is showing signs and symptoms of depression, teen depression treatment is a must, and the entire course of treatment with timely follow ups is extremely important and crucial in helping them recover completely from the condition. Some of the options for teen depression treatment include counseling, psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of any two or all three.
Counselling Counseling is very effective and helpful, especially in teens, because they might not even be aware of the problem or condition there are suffering from. Student counselors often explain and build awareness among teens regarding the various problems they could be facing or could encounter and how to combat the same. Case studies discussed with them either in a group or one on one will help them relate to the problems they are facing. Teens should be encouraged to attend counseling sessions conducted at schools or community centers so that they are in a better position to assess their own problems.
Psychotherapy or Therapy Psychotherapy is another form of treating depression, where qualified and trained psychologists or psychiatrists will be speaking to teens, questioning them about their problems, assessing them based on the answers provided, and diagnosing the exact cause of the problem. While it is all very well to treat the symptoms and get rid of them, it is important to find out the exact causes of depression and for teen depression treatment to tackle them. Once the causes have been established and treated, the symptoms will no longer appear. During the initial session, if the therapist suspects a physiological problems like hypothyroidism or any other cause, they will request for certain laboratory tests and, if the results are positive, the case will be referred to an appropriate physician for further treatment and care. Therefore, one must always insist that a thorough physical examination and cause is detected before commencing treatment. Therapy will help teens to open and discuss their problems, which will decrease the burden on their subconscious and act as a mental detoxification process. Once their fears and emotions are out of their minds, they will experience some relief and will be open to suggestions and ideas. Therefore, timely follow up and repeat sessions are important. Therapists also teach teens to overcome their fears, face problems, find ways to build their self confidence and self esteem, improve their interpersonal skills and develop problem-solving skills. All these will help them cultivate important life skills which will hold them in good stead in future. In addition to individual therapy, group therapy sessions and family therapy sessions are also useful for teen depression treatment, as they help parents and children, along with siblings, relate better to each other.
Medication Medications or pharmacological drugs prescribed for teen depression include Prozac and other antidepressants. Physicians normally change the dosage and taper the dose once they are confident that patients have recovered, but this is normally done based on various tests and therapy sessions conducted. Medication should always be given by the parent or under supervision, mainly because teens tend to neglect taking medications regularly and on time. This is especially so for depressed teens. Antidepressants do have certain side effects and all warning signs and notes mentioned should be carefully read become administering the same. In our view, drug medications as a form of teen depression treatment should only be used as a last resort.
